I read a fascinating story about how Dr. Christopher treated a soldier suffering from a severe case of impetigo using a black walnut hull tincture prepared in rubbing alcohol. After witnessing the visible improvement, Dr. Christopher’s previously cynical and skeptical Army Major gave him permission to establish a laboratory on the base. As a
result, he became the only practicing herbalist in the United States Army during World War II.

His black walnut tincture was also used for fungal infections and a condition known as jungle rot. When soldiers learned that Private Christopher was helping cases of jungle rot with his black walnut tincture, his patient load multiplied
rapidly.

With that remarkable story in mind, I’d like to tell you about one of my favorite cleansing herbs: Black Walnut.

Black Walnut, also known as Juglans nigra, is a large tree native
to the eastern and central United States. Herbalists primarily use the green outer hull of the nut because it contains many of the plant’s most active constituents. Historically, Native Americans and early herbalists used Black Walnut to support digestion, cleansing, and skin health.

One of the most important compounds found in Black Walnut is
called juglone (pronounced JOO-glone). Juglone possesses antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiparasitic properties. The hulls are also rich in tannins, iodine, minerals, and antioxidants. Together, these compounds help tighten tissues, support healthy skin, and create an environment that is less favorable for unwanted microbes.

Black Walnut is best known as a cleansing herb. Herbalists often include it in parasite-cleansing formulas because it may help discourage intestinal worms and yeast overgrowth such as Candida. It is commonly combined with wormwood and cloves as part of a broader cleansing program.

Another important use of Black
Walnut is supporting skin health. Because of its antimicrobial and astringent properties, it has traditionally been used for acne, eczema, fungal infections, ringworm, and athlete’s foot. The tannins help dry irritated tissue while supporting the skin’s natural healing process.

One aspect I appreciate about Black Walnut is that it reflects the
herbal principle that healthy skin often mirrors internal balance. Dr. Christopher and many traditional herbalists taught that when digestion and elimination are functioning properly, improvements in the skin often follow.

I would also like to mention a few safety considerations. Black Walnut is a potent herb and is generally not used
continuously for long periods. Some individuals may experience digestive irritation or allergic reactions, especially those with tree nut allergies. It is also generally avoided during pregnancy and nursing.

I’d like to share a personal experience from my research paper. My daughter struggled with persistent acne that showed little improvement
with conventional products. As part of a broader cleansing approach that included bowel, kidney, liver, and blood-support formulas, we used a diluted Black Walnut extract externally. Over several weeks, we observed reduced inflammation and noticeable improvement in her skin. This experience reinforced for me the value of supporting the body holistically rather than focusing only on surface symptoms.

In closing, Black Walnut is a powerful traditional herb valued for cleansing, skin support, and its antimicrobial properties. While it should be used wisely and in moderation, it remains one of the most respected herbs in natural healing traditions.

If you remember only one thing
about Black Walnut, remember this: it has earned a long-standing reputation as a remarkable herb for supporting healthy skin and helping the body resist infections.
