The future of fitness isn’t just about lifting heavier or running faster – it’s about training smarter, with artificial intelligence (AI) providing the ultimate coaching aid.

AI is transforming gyms into data-rich environments where every rep, every heartbeat, and every movement pattern gets analysed to create perfectly tailored workouts that maximise results while minimising injury risk.

According to the Summer 2025 Wellness Watch Report from ABC Fitness, nearly 50% of consumers use AI-powered fitness and wellness apps daily, with 30% using one weekly.

The report also reveals generational gaps in AI adoption, with 38% of Millennials and 33% of Gen Z strongly agreeing that AI supports their health goals.

By using algorithms and data, AI can offer personalised workout and nutrition plans, enhance user engagement through virtual coaching and motivation, and powers a new generation of smart gym equipment.

Virtual coaching

Virtual AI coaches use machine learning (ML) to analyse our habits, tailoring recommendations down to the smallest details.

Instead of generic one-size-fits-all advice, like the flavour found in early fitness apps, AI and ML deliver workouts and wellness plans tailored just for you, offering real-time information and advice that dynamically adapts to your needs and goals, and the equipment you have available.

The more data you feed into the app, the better it becomes at continuously adjusting to ensure your workouts stay challenging and effective as you progress.

AI is transforming fitness in many ways:

  • Customised Plans:AI analyses user data like age, fitness level, goals, and biometrics to create tailored workout routines and nutrition plans.
  • Real-time Adaptation:AI-powered systems can adjust workout intensity and program details based on a user’s real-time performance and progress.
  • Virtual Coaching:AI provides virtual trainers that offer guidance, posture correction, and personalised feedback, especially beneficial for remote or at-home workouts.
  • Behavioural Nudges and Reminders: AI helps send timely reminders and motivational messages, encouraging users to stay consistent with their fitness routines and maintain healthy habits.

This advice role is also extending into the nutrition realm, with AI increasingly being used for smart diet planning. A growing number of reputable platforms are providing recommendations based on scientific research and individual data.

Real-world examples

The Planet Fitness app incorporates AI through “Eve,” its personal AI coach, which offers tailored workout and nutrition advice, wellness tracking, and motivational support to help members stay accountable.

The app provides personalised exercise plans, on-demand workouts, and integrates wellness tracking for exercise, nutrition, sleep, and mood.

The Fitbod app learns from the completed workouts, recovery data and strength progression over time to suggest exercise variations, rep adjustments, or reload periods to help users keep progressing beyond plateaus.

MyFitnessPal integrates AI to provide real-time dietary advice. The app’s advanced MealScan capability allows users to simply take a picture of their meal to get information instantly on calories and micronutrient ratios.

The FitGenie app takes this diet feedback to the next level by suggesting meal plans and generating shopping lists based on what foods work for your metabolism, fitness regimen and overall goal. The more you use it, the more accurate it gets at the suggestions it makes.

MyFitnessPal also integrates this food intake data when making workout suggestions based on a user’s current activity levels and goals. The app can adjust daily calorie targets and exercise recommendations dynamically.

The eGym app incorporates machine learning to provide Continuous Motivation with real-time feedback, such as form corrections or motivational prompts, which keep users motivated and engaged during workouts.

Smart Equipment

Manufacturers are also integrating AI algorithms into smart gym equipment to provide instant feedback on movement and technique.

AI-powered gym equipment uses sensors, cameras, and ML to provide personalised workout plans, real-time coaching, and performance tracking, helping users improve technique, optimise lifts, and achieve fitness goals more effectively with less injury risk.

The Future of Smart Fitness

Looking ahead, as advancements in technology enable more personalised and effective fitness experiences for users, AI fitness apps will play a greater role in our daily fitness routines.

We can expect AI Personal Trainers that adapt to your mood, stress, and energy levels; smart clothing with embedded sensors for real-time performance analysis; and integration with a broader ecosystem of platform-based services, like healthcare systems, where data from wearables is directly shared with a range of professionals.
